Offering a wide range of topics is part of the FMX concept. Around 250 speakers and curators touch on all kinds of current issues relevant for film and media creators 👩💻. Artificial Intelligence 🤖 being the most obvious topic in 2024, the AI track at FMX, curated by Andy Cochrane, shed some light on the status quo with three insightful presentations and a panel: “AI is now at the Gates of VFX & Animation”.
This panel will be the first session from the 2024 edition we would like to share with everybody - for free. It has been released on the FMX YouTube Channel. More will follow soon. We will announce the release dates on Instagram and LinkedIn - so stay tuned!
Andy Cochrane shared the stage with his speakers Elena Garcés García, Ben Hansford and Bilawal Sidhu, joined by moderator Mike Seymour. They discussed the probable impact of AI on the creative industries, the current oversupply of applications and the lack of a one-button-solution, the horror visions surrounding AI and the great opportunities it can hold for artists.
Andy is an immersive creator for interactive mediums such as virtual and augmented reality, installations, live events and large-scale domes.
Elena leads the AI & Optics team as Director and Senior Research Scientist at SEDDI. She has more than ten years of experience in computer graphics and vision, mainly focused on 3D digitization.
Ben teaches Machine Learning & AI at University of Southern California (USC) - School of Cinematic Arts.
Bilawal is a creator, engineer, and product builder obsessed with blending reality and imagination using art and science. He has more than 1.4M+ followers across YouTube and TikTok.
Mike has a Ph.D in digital humans built on a B Sc. in Pure Maths from the University of Sydney where he also did his Masters.
Second release: The Mentorship panel
No less mind-opening is a panel titled "Being the Change Through Mentorship" from the Managing Change track at FMX. Curator Imke Fehrmann invited Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt and Julie Ann Crommett on stage to discuss building strong connections, improving professional networks for support and striving for equal opportunities and participation.
All three speakers are members of WIA (Women in Animation).
Imke is the Global Head of Production at RISE Visual Effects Studios and has been producing animation and visual effects for almost 30 years. She has been managing and producing innovative projects all around the world, building and leading creative teams.

Nosipho is the founder and CEO of the production company Chocolate Tribe as well as the founder of the FMX partner event AVIJOZI, an animation, VFX and interactive gathering taking place in Johannesburg on September 14 and 15.
Third release: In-Camera Effects masterclass
At FMX, Todd Sheridan Perry talked about the practical and in-camera effects of the series I'M A VIRGO. A day later, he gave a Masterclass and set up a forced-perspective shoot, right there as a hands-on demo for attendees. The process is complex and can soon be viewed on the FMX YouTube Channel. Both sessions are part of the FMX track Then and Now, curated by VFX journalist Ian Failes, who joined Todd on stage.
Todd works as a freelance visual effects supervisor/artist as well as a screenwriter, editor and director. He has worked on projects like LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS and DOCTOR STRANGE.
