Additional VFX Supervisor Janelle Croshaw Ralla will discuss the visual effects of Captain Marvel. She will be joined by Dominik Zimmerle, VFX Supervisor for Trixter, and Florian Gellinger, Executive Producer at Rise Fx, to discuss the making of the film. They will take you all the way from pre-production and filming in and around Los Angeles to building the fully digital city of Hala. They'll go in depth on the de-aging workflow for Samuel L. Jackson and how they created the digital version of Goose the cat, and they'll discuss many of the other varied visual effects throughout the film.
Janelle Croshaw Ralla is an award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor known for her groundbreaking work on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, the digital Tupac concert performance at Coachella, Spike Jonze’s feature film “Her” and, most recently, the de-aging work for Samuel L. Jackson in “Captain Marvel”. She specializes in working closely with cutting edge auteur directors to realize their vision, exhibiting a keen eye for seamless photorealism. Janelle explores new directions in the art and process of visual effects engaging trust with her hands on creative approach, minimal impact technique on set, and cost effective simplified workflows. Janelle started at Digital Domain in 1999 and has since worked for many companies around the world on the vendor and studio side. She is equally comfortable working in the worlds of motion pictures, television, advertising, special venue projects and virtual reality. Janelle is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Visual Effects Society, and also a new mother living with her family in Los Angeles, CA.
Florian is not particularly good at Nuke, Maya, Houdini or Photoshop. His team is doing all the work - just like his team is also writing this text on his behalf. Florian really succeeds at thinking he knows stuff better and he is also one of the founding members of RISE, an award-winning VFX studio based in Berlin, Stuttgart, Munich and Cologne. That's why he works as exec. producer on many shows the studio works on, a great way to blame others in case something goes south. In that sense he's very important for the economic side of things and he knows enough of everything to tie the strings together. You could call him Jack of all trades, master of none or just a typical case of CGI-Attention-Deficit-Disorder.
RISE is an award-winning, gravity-defying, mind-blowing VFX company with offices in Berlin, Cologne, Stuttgart and Munich.
If you think you've seen it all - you haven't until you've worked here. This is where dreams are made, technology is pushed to its breaking point and company parties are refered to as "the end of all days". In the past we've delivered work for Guardians of the Galaxy, Harry Potter, Captain America, Black Panther, Jim Button, Dark, Sense8 and Babylon Berlin.
We've recently finished work on Dumbo, Hellboy, Captain Marvel, Shazam! and Avengers: Endgame. We're currently working full throttle on Dark Season 2, Babylon Berlin Season 3 and a bunch of shows who's names shall not be named. Yet. But soon. Maybe at FMX. Come and see yourself.
TRIXTER’s Dominik Zimmerle is a highly experienced visual effects supervisor. His career is built on an ability to find the best approach for every production and, he says, working with a world-class creative team. “I love being part of a process where a whole team of artists and technicians combine skill and expertise to carve out something beyond anyone’s expectations.”
Dominik recently oversaw TRIXTER’s work on Captain Marvel, his third credit as VFX supervisor for Marvel Studios. The extensive work ranged from full CG environments to key battle sequences and the scene-stealing alien cat, “Goose”. He has previously also overseen work on Spider-Man Homecoming and Ant-Man. Other career highlights include VFX supervision for Independence Day: Resurgence and contributing to the Ultron Mark 1 scenes for Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Iron Man suit assembly for Iron Man 3.
Dominik grew up watching 2D animated movies, setting his sights at an early age on a career in animation. His talents in concept art subsequently led to an apprenticeship with TRIXTER in 2007. Recognising his potential, Dominik was moved steadily through the ranks over the following decade, from concept art trainee to compositor, lead compositor and compositing supervisor before settling in his current role.
