Storytelling in VR: from "Windy Day" to "Age of Sail"

Google Spotlight Stories has been a pioneer in immersive, interactive storytelling; developing techniques and technology to create award-winning shows that have been embraced by filmmakers and audiences the world over.

With an international list of partners and contributors comprising some of the best in the industry, the project has released 16 titles in just 6 years, many in multiple formats, from full VR to mobile to 360 and film.

Jan Pinkava will review the project’s greatest hits and biggest learnings, bringing us up to date with an in-depth look at the Oscar shortlisted Age of Sail.

Jan Pinkava, Creative Director, Google Spotlight Stories

Jan Pinkava is the Academy Award-winning founder and Creative Director of the renowned Google Spotlight Stories project; a team of artists and technologists, working with leading directors and studios, that have defined new forms of immersive, interactive storytelling for film, mobile and VR. Spotlight Stories have been recognized with many accolades, including the ASIFA Ub Iwerks award for technical advancement in the art of animation, the first Emmy for outstanding innovation in interactive storytelling, and an Oscar nomination.

His career in Animation spans a quarter century, including 13 years as a director at Pixar where he wrote and directed 1997 Oscar-winning short film Geri's Game and was the creator and co-director of Pixar's Oscar-winning 2007 feature film Ratatouille.

FMX is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the City of Stuttgart and MFG Baden-Wuerttemberg, taking place in cooperation with the VES Visual Effects Society and ACM SIGGRAPH, supported by the Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart (AMCRS), Autodesk, Backstage, Epic Games/Unreal Engine, Foundry, Mackevision and ScanlineVFX. FMX is an event by the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, organized by Animationsinstitut, hosting the Animation Production Days (APD), a joint venture with the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS).
