Collaborating closely with The Guardian, an interactive team from The Mill’s London studio took over seven months to create the seven minute long VR experience titled 6X9: An Immersive Experience of Solitary Confinement. The experience places the viewer inside a solitary confinement unit with little more than a bed and toilet, encouraging such psychological effects as blurred vision, hallucinations and a sense of floating that may occur after long-term sensory deprivation. CG Lead Ed Thomas discusses how The Mill team worked from first-person accounts and documentaries, utilising game engine VR technology to create this groundbreaking immersive film.
Ed Thomas joined The Mill in November 2015 as CG Lead working across a number of interactive projects.
Ed’s most recent creative achievement is his work collaborating with The Guardian on ‘6 x 9: An Immersive Experience of Solitary Confinement.
With over 18 years games development experience, working with companies such as Funcom, Rebellion, Acclaim and Electronic Arts he has either been the Lead or Technical Artist involved with many of the titles in a game design capacity.
Ed joined electronic arts to lead the art team developing what would become their ‘next-gen’ games pipeline. This technology fed directly into EA’s first ever ‘next-gen’ game ‘Battlefield 2: Modern Combat’ receiving a BAFTA nomination for ‘Best technical achievement in a Video Game’
