Quantum Break Facial Animation Pipeline | Antti Herva, Lead Character Technical Artist | Remedy Entertainment
Antti will describe how Remedy incorporated 4D surface capture into its pipeline to create large volumes of in-game facial animation in Quantum Break.
Antti Herva is a computer graphics enthusiast, film buff and avid gamer. These traits contributed to his decision to join Remedy Entertainment in 2012 where he recently shipped his first AAA game Quantum Break. He has worked on visual effects and animation for commercials and film between 2006-2012 at the Finnish post production company Fake graphics as Technical Director. Over the years he has specialized in rigging, custom deformers, animation, simulation, pipelines and production. Despite his technical prowess, his background is that of an artist with a Bachelor’s Degree of Culture and Arts from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Finland.
Remedy Entertainment Ltd. is a Finnish video game and game technology developer founded in 1995. The company is best known for its acclaimed Max Payne and Alan Wake series of video games and more recently Quantum Break. Remedy excels at cinematic story driven third person shooters.
Kevin is an independent filmmaker and director at Blur Studio in Culver City, CA. He joined Blur in 2003 as a scene assembly, lighting and compositing artist and shortly after began a 9 year run as blur’s CG/VFX supervisor on dozens of shows. Notable projects include the prologue for
Thor 2: The Dark World, the David Fincher produced Halo 4: scanned cinematic trailer, multiple Batman Arkham cinematics, and the notorious Deadpool test footage that triggered the blockbuster film’s greenlight. In his free time he continues to explore the filmmaking medium seeking
ways to realize visions of a personal nature by harnessing a tool set and production knowledge acquired over years of industry experience, then distilling these processes down intomanageable workflows suitable to creative individuals working in relative independence.

Dr Colin Urquhart is a technology entrepreneur and a leading pioneer in the field of stereo photogrammetry. Colin first became interested in computer stereo vision during his masters project, and in 1990, he and his supervisor were the first to publish the approach of “texture enhanced stereo”, which they later developed into active stereo photogrammetry. Colin continued the development of active stereo photogrammetry at BBN Systems and Technologies and at the Turing Institute, before co-founding and becoming Technical Director of C3D Ltd. Colin joined University of Glasgow in 2001 where he played a leading role in developing the technique of passive stereo photogrammetry. In 2003, Colin co-founded Dimensional Imaging Ltd as a spin-out from the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh to pioneer the use of passive stereo photogrammetry for 3D surface capture, and more recently 4D surface capture. Colin has been Chief Executive Officer of Dimensional Imaging since its foundation. Colin has a MEng (with merit) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Heriot-Watt University and a PhD in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow. In addition, Colin has received significant entrepreneurial training at the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of Strathclyde and the University of California at San Diego. In 2002, Colin was awarded a prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh Enterprise Fellowship and in 2008, he was awarded the Gannochy Trust Innovation Award, Scotland’s highest accolade for individual achievement in innovation.
