The "VR Experience" transforms this year's main theme "Immersion & Virtual Reality - The Future of Content Viewing and Producing" into a realtime, hands-on experience that allows attendees to explore conference content in a physical and individual way. This virtual reality program and exhibit was created in conjunction with non-profit and non-proprietary corporation The Immersive Technology Alliance (The ITA).  The ITA is the voice and standards body for immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, stereoscopic 3D, and more that aims to make immersive technology successful.

SONAR – A 360° Experience

An asteroid emerges from the darkness of space, sending out some kind of signal. A drone tries to locate the source and dives deep into an extensive cave system.

SONAR is a new kind of cinematic entertainment, striking a balance between traditional movie making and interactive media. The shortfilm is a fully immersive, 360° computer-generated experience for various virtual reality headsets.

SONAR was created by Philipp Maas and Dominik Stockhausen at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany, during the summer term of 2014. Production started in may and finished at the end of july 2014.

The Immersive Technology Alliance

FMX 2015's virtual reality program and exhibit was created in conjunction with The Immersive Technology Alliance (The ITA).  The ITA is the voice and standards body for immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, stereoscopic 3D, and more.  Non-profit and non-proprietary, the alliance has a history dating back to 2009 and features dozens of member companies and organizations.  The ITA's reason for being is to make immersive technology successful, and they do this by helping build events and conferences, facilitating industry development and discussion, supporting academic research, and ultimately identifying and helping solve industry-wide problems.  

In addition to being partnered with FMX 2015, The ITA is also an official partner for SIGGRAPH 2015, and holds its own industry-building conference called Immersed (http://www.getimmersed.com).  Sample members of the ITA's advisory board include Habib Zargarpour, Creative Director for Microsoft Studios, John Gaeta, Creative Director for New Media and Experiences at Lucasfilm, Neil Trevett, President of the Khronos Group and VP of the Mobile Content Ecosystem for Nvidia, and Dr. Jon Peddie of Jon Peddie Research.  

ITA members include international technology makers, content makers, academic institutions, and applicable industry groups.  Outside the direct membership, the alliance has demonstrated working relationships with many of the leading industry players which have participated with ITA events and developments.   Basic level membership for qualified content makers is free, and special arrangements are available for start-up companies.  The alliance is a formal non-profit corporation, and is designed to be open, transparent, and affordable.

Experience Virtual Reality with ZEISS VR ONE

ZEISS VR ONE is a mobile Virtual Reality (VR) headset that works with smartphones featuring display sizes of between 4.7 and 5.2 inches. To dive into virtual worlds, all the user needs to do is select an appropriate VR app and slide his or her smartphone into the headset using the tray provided. Apps, for instance those which project videos of concerts in 360 degree format, become a truly special experience – allowing the user to watch a video from a range of perspectives.
