Newsletter #5: First exciting program highlights
FMX is shaping up and so is the FMX 2013 program!Taking place two weeks earlier this year, Europe's most renowned conference on digital entertainment adopts the slogan "lean, smart and agile." Its focus: the ongoing paradigm shift in the animation, effects, games and transmedia industries. Film highlights include Cloud Atlas, Life of Pi and The Croods. And there's more - here's a sneak peek into this year's main themes. Transforming the paradigm Nothing stays the same. FMX zeroes in on how smart technologies, adaptive approaches and flexible strategies are shaping the business, allowing for integrated storytelling, affordable workflows, accessible budgets, independent initiatives, new players and global success. Already on-board: curator Ludwig von Reiche, Managing Director/Senior Director of Business Development at NVIDIA ARC with presentations on "Cloud Computing" and "Cloud Gaming." Moreover, FMX takes up last year's focus on "Virtual Production" in a dedicated track by curator David Morin, Chair, Joint Technology Subcommittee on Virtual Production and Chair, Autodesk Film CTO Advisory Council. Wild for Animation Prehistory has never been this much fun. Enjoy the prehistoric family in The Croods, which will be released in March. The DreamWorks Animation production focuses on the world's first family, the last survivors of their kind. While Computer Graphics Principal Engineer Eric Tabellion discusses the use of various lighting techniques used in The Croods and other films, Visual Effects Supervisor Markus Manninen gives an overview over the animation process. The wildness is continued with "Wild 'n' Strange", curated by Andreas Hykade, a program series dedicated to offbeat indie highlights far from mainstream.
Games and Transmedia - the next level The game is far from over. FMX continues to discuss current developments from the perspective of artists and content developers across the industries including multi-platforms as well as questions concerning production and distribution. Also on the radar: "Games: Visual Arts," curated by Joseph Olin, as well as talks on "Game Cinematics" (curated by Dominic Cianciolo, NetherRealm Studios). Other track highlights span from "Game Characters" by Henry LaBounta (Microsoft) to "Real-time Rendering" by Wolfgang Engel (Confetti). In addition, Inga von Staden (Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg) curates a track on "Indie Games" and a program series on Transmedia experiences which concentrates on the central theme "Building Worlds." Press play, game on. FMX, ITFS and APD Together they stand: In 2013, FMX and the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) further continue their long-standing, successful partnership.
