FMX 2018 Trailer
The FMX trailers are traditionally created by students of Animationsinstitut (Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg) in their third year of study.
Following the "learning by doing" credo of Animationsintitut, the team Behind the Beard developed an IP (Intellectual Property) for the first time. The students created one story world that they turned into two different experiences – a trailer series consisting of seven episodes and an associated game app.
This year's FMX trailer Behind the Beard is all about everyday problems, the ones that might seem insignificant and dull at first, but end up turning our world upside down. This very relatable topic is discussed through the story of Bruno, a little beaver living in a forest, and Ben, a bearded hipster.
Inspired by the landscape of the Black Forest Mountains where the team stayed together for five days to brainstorm on a concept, they came up with the crazy idea, which would be the basis of this year‘s official FMX trailer and game app.
So why the beard obsession?
The Behind the Beard team explains:
"The teams only motive wasn ́t just that half of our team members wear beards. In Behind the Beard we wanted to explore a symbiosis between two very different worlds and two very different characters, who could never meet face to face despite the fact they are dependent on each other. Furthermore, the connection between modern man and nature is a subject that is constantly on our minds nowadays”.
Producer Ela Duca adds to that:
“The light tone of the very short animated trailer episodes is supposed to make it easy for the viewer to accept the conventions of our eccentric universe. Nevertheless, we strived to point out - in a subtle, yet critical manner - what consequences one may suffer, when one is striving so hard to model himself based on a popular trend”.
For trailer director Noel Winzen the good team spirit was key for the successful production of Behind the Beard:
"The short episode format we decided on for the trailers meant a huge amount of work for the production time that we were given. Nonetheless, our ambition was high and the fact that the team members clicked so well with each other got us through the workload. The most important thing was not to forget that we are still learning and that we want to have fun with it".
Trailer director and producer Marc Angele further explains:
"As the two individual worlds proved to be pretty hard to connect, we decided it was best to focus on the above mentioned consequences in the trailers, by showing what is happening to Bruno, our main character, when Ben grooms his beard.
The Game-App, instead, focuses more on Ben and is meant to let anyone put himself in the shoes of a narcissist who spends most of his time in front of the mirror. The feedback we got from people who already played it was overwhelmingly good, it ‘s fun for the player and the people watching it".
All of the trailers featuring Ben and Bruno work well both watched separately or in bulk. The team is happy to have their story-world showcased at FMX 2018 and hope to reach as many people as possible through both the Behind the Beard trailers and the game-app.
