How to Misuse MoCap Data with Generative Systems

The German Institute for Standardization (DIN) has created more than 33,000 standards in the last century. These standards shape our daily movement. The project behind the FMX Trailer – Dancing in Norms (DIN) – plays with their contradiction: standards are designed for us, but they also limit us. Based on an improvised dance performance, it explores ways of translating and "misusing" motion capture data. By developing generative systems for the captured dance, it transforms motion into abstract character designs. This talk examines a systematic approach to motion capture that challenges conventional applications and explores different ways of storytelling based purely on movement and abstract shapes.
