VFX for THE ASSESSMENT

In a not-so-distant future where parenthood is strictly controlled, a couple's seven-day assessment for the right to have a child unravels into a psychological nightmare.

We break down how we used digital effects to build a dystopian world for this science fiction thriller without showing anything digital at all.

Rolf Muetze, VFX Supervisor, LAVAlabs moving images

Rolf Muetze is a VFX Supervisor at the visual effects and animation studio LAVAlabs moving images. He is also one of the co-founder of the studio, which he runs together with Michael Brink.
Rolf studied Visual Communication at Muenster University of Applied Sciences and Computer Arts at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and has been working in the field of animation and visual effects as a 3d artist, technical director, animator and CG/VFX supervisor for over 20 years.
Back in the days Rolf worked for das werk as a digital artist and became head of 3D department at PICTORION das werk in 2005. In 2012, he joined Weta Digital as Lighting Technical Director for Peter Jackson's ‘The Hobbit’. Rolf has been teaching as a professor for visual effects and animation at the international film school cologne since 2015.

 

Matthias Backmann, Compositing Supervisor, LAVAlabs moving images

Matthias Backmann started as a Media Designer over 15 years ago and switched into VFX after studying at the ifs international filmschool in Cologne. He is a member of the Visual Effects Society and worked as a compositor for companies like Framestore, Rise FX and Pixomondo in the EU and Canada.

At LAVAlabs, working in different roles in Compositing, Editorial and Pipeline enabled him to become a Compositing Supervisor on multiple projects, as well as accompany film shoots as On Set Supervisor.
