Visual Effects - Dept. VII

The HFF Visual Effects (VFX) program is offered within our Department VII – Imagery. There is a separate application process for our VFX degree program.

The objective of this course of studies is to qualify students for work in VFX – as supervisors, producers, or creative directors – i.e. for planning and supervising both the design and practical execution of image generation, using real and virtual visual elements. Our training is particularly tailored to the needs of the VFX sector of the film industry. Course offerings are supplemented by industry input, in the form of workshops, guest lectures, and seminars. The tools provided to students by the department include access to top-notch professional software and hardware. The VFX course of studies also includes a practical semester, during which students work as interns for technically relevant service and production companies.

During their course work, VFX students face a range of highly varied challenges. On the one hand, they need to acquire knowledge of the technical and virtual tools, while aesthetic competence and artistic responsibility are what will eventually make them true artists. Moreover: To create the right imagery requires an intense examination of the storytelling content, plus highly developed team and communication skills.

Our study program also addresses another key concern:
In the past, the cinematic image making professions were occupied nearly exclusively by men. A fact demonstrated by our students is: For the production of accomplished cinematic imagery, gender is absolutely irrelevant! For this reason, at Dept. VII – Imagery, we encourage women, in particular, to explore the exciting field of VFX.
