Bringing the Characters of Magic the Gathering to Life

Axis Studios stood as a full creative partner in some of Magic: The Gathering’s best-loved cinematic trailer releases, including the recent back-to-back series of gothic-horror-themed trailers Innistrad: Crimson Vow and Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. Head of characters, Amy Ash, will discuss how the team brought to life the characters for the well-established franchise. She'll share the specific techniques, how the team used Arnold and ShotGrid to speed up the Surfacing and review process, how we set up shaders for fast, non-destructive iteration and generate easily reviewable media so we can identify issues quickly and efficiently, leaving more time for quality and creativity.

Amy Ash, Head of Characters, Axis Studios


Amy’s passion for character development and her keen artistic skills make her an invaluable member of the Axis team as Head of Characters. With 20 years experience in the industry and a degree in Natural History Illustration from Blackpool and the Fylde college, Amy began her career as a texture artist and illustrator at RealtimeUK, before taking on senior artist roles with the likes of Nexus, Aardman and Passion Pictures. Amy joined Axis in 2018, and has since worked on high profile projects including the ‘Tales of Runeterra’ animated shorts for League of Legends, the award-winning Magic The Gathering: War of the Spark and Summoners War. Amy ensures that all characters in our projects are of the highest artistic calibre, mentoring artists, solving technical challenges and translating the character vision of the Art Director and Director into reality.
