Giving a Face to AI

Video on demand

Over the past couple of years Digital Domain’s Digital Human Group has been busy developing their system of creating autonomous virtual humans.

We will discuss how our approach of modularizing different technologies works to design characters that feel compelling in appearance, voice, expression, mannerisms and behavior, all in order to ultimately breathe life into modern chatbots.

Melissa Cell, Technology Supervisor, Digital Domain

Melissa Cell has worked at Digital Domain for 9 years as a Technical Director and Software Engineer. As a Technical Director, she developed pipelines for visual effects artists and supported dozens of feature films, episodics, and commercials. In 2018 she joined Digital Domain's Digital Human Group to develop realistic digital humans for visual effects, video games, live events, and other real-time applications.

Matthias Wittmann, Visual Effects Supervisor, Digital Domain

A recognized digital human pioneer, Matthias Wittmann has worked in the film industry as an innovator, animator and supervisor on groundbreaking digital humans for features, experiential and special projects at Digital Domain since 2004.
The quality of his work earned him recognition across the industry, including a Visual Effects Society award for "Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Motion Picture" for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” a Grand Clio for “Virtual 2Pac – Coachella,” and a VES nomination for the character Thistlewit in “Maleficent.”

Since 2015 Matthias has specialized in developing interactive virtual humans for AR and VR experiences, working exclusively with real-time engines. As VFX Supervisor in Digital Domain’s Digital Human Group he strives to further push the envelope in the autonomous digital human field.
