In this session, the Oscar-winning DNEG team behind the visual effects for Dune will take you behind the scenes and dive into some of the work that brought the iconic film to life. DNEG's Rhys Salcombe, Francesco Dellanna and Marc Austin will share insights on how some of their biggest challenges were faced. They’ll be breaking down some of the key sequences and techniques, including how on-set innovations helped to achieve a cohesive look in post production, how to sell the scale of giant creatures moving through vast desert landscapes, and how to make a city on an alien planet feel lived-in.
Marc Austin is an award-winning Build Supervisor at DNEG with over 10 years of film experience. Starting his career as a Product Designer, he transitioned to working in advertising, TV, and the motion picture industry and began his career at DNEG in 2011. Marc has worked on several high-profile features such as ‘Assassin’s Creed’, ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’, ‘Godzilla’ and 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. His specialisation in surfacing and proceduralism drove the technical pipeline for 'Pacific Rim: Uprising'. This led him, most recently, to work as Build Supervisor on ‘Dune’, for which he received a 2022 VES Award for ‘Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project’ and nomination for ‘Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal Feature’.
Francesco Dell’Anna is an award-winning Compositing Supervisor at DNEG with over 10 years of experience. Francesco has extensive knowledge of the technology and pipeline used to create outstanding visual effects, and likes to add his own creativity to projects in order to deliver the highest quality shots. Most recently, Francesco’s work as Compositing Supervisor on ‘Dune’ received a 2022 VES Award for ‘Outstanding Compositing and Lighting in a Feature’. He also received a VES Award for ‘Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal Feature’ in 2018 for his work on ‘Blade Runner 2049’. His impressive filmography also includes ‘Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw’, ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2’ and ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’.
Rhys Salcombe is an award-winning DFX Supervisor and CG Supervisor at DNEG. With extensive experience on large-scale, build-intensive VFX work across a range of popular Hollywood franchises, Rhys’s work as CG Supervisor on ‘Dune’ has received a 2022 VES Nomination for Outstanding Created Environment In A Photoreal Feature - an award he received in 2018 for his work on ‘Blade Runner 2049’. Since graduating in 2006 from Swansea Institute of Higher Education, Rhys has worked on more than 30 feature films across a variety of roles. As he has honed his visual effects expertise, he has taken on leading and supervisory roles on many features, such as 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters’, ‘Star Trek Beyond’, and ‘Greyhound’.
