‘Enhanced Locations’ | Bringing a 615-year-old palace to life through Next Generation AR

Over the past few years Nexus Studios have paved the way for the future of Augmented Reality through the creation of ‘Enhanced Locations’, a term used to describe how real world places such as venues, theme parks, stadiums and galleries are mapped out digitally using the latest Visual Positioning technologies so that hyper accurate 3D content can be placed intelligently in situ. Hear from Nexus Studios Creative Director Alex Jenkins on their journey and their latest project which saw them bring a 615-year-old Korean palace to life through a ground-breaking AR guided tour, featuring a playful and enigmatic wayfinding character. Visitors are able to interact with members of the Joseon dynasty, reimagined in AR and partake in ancient customs and traditions. All streamed to the highest ever quality achieved in AR for mobile.

Alex Jenkins, Creative Director, Nexus Studios

Alex is a multi award-winning Creative Director collaborating with some of the most progressive digital companies and brands in the world.

Working at the cutting-edge of XR, Alex is able to apply his multidisciplinary background in Graphic + Interactive Design, Illustration and Character Animation to a diverse range of projects including, XR experiences, campaigns, digital branding, installations and exhibitions, mobile Apps, websites and games.

Alex has led some of Nexus’ most pioneering interactive projects, including the reimagining of the iconic series ‘Civilisations’ for the BBC’s first ever AR app as well as the BAFTA nominated collaboration with Google Arts and Culture and CERN to produce a mixed reality journey through the birth and evolution of the universe, as narrated by Tilda Swinton.

He was also pivotal in transforming the Dallas Cowboys stadium into the world’s first 5G enabled AR venue, developing a number of hyper-accurate, location specific AR experiences, viewing from any seat in the stadium and playing in real-time. More recently, he brought history back to life in the grounds of Changdeokgung Palace, Seoul, a first of its kind location enhanced, character led AR tour experience.

Alex has received several industry accolades from the likes of Cannes Lions, The One Show, The Webbys and The Art Directors Club. He currently creatively oversees and guides the Interactive Arts department at Nexus Studios.
