Fresh Visions: Emerging Artists 1

With Fresh Visions: Emerging Artists, FMX has created a platform for animation driven projects by up and coming artists from Europe. In this track, we bring these talents to the virtual FMX stage. They share their creative visions, production realities, and challenges along the way with us – join us and catch a glimpse of all the facets of animation today.

Following Projects and Artists will be featured:

How to make a feature film when you are a nobody.

Matisse Gonzales (Animator, Illustrator, Director)

A cursed production for a cursed film. Let’s not jinx it.

The independent way is the scary way. It is easier to belong to a big company and get a paycheck every Friday than to stand alone in an endless pit of artistic sorrow. In this talk, you will get to know “Condenaditos” (Cursed Children), the feature film I am developing, while being a virtual “nobody” in this great sea of animators. You will know the birth of the project at ASF, where we are now and how we plan on making this crazy 80 minutes project with no money, experience and under the worst circumstances.

Lucy's life - Case study of a virtual being

Philipp Maas (Director, Creative Producer, VR / AR)

Interactive storytelling with Virtual Beings and connecting fiction with real-world events.

What happens if you befriend your favorite character on social media and start to interact with them every day? Using Lucy's recent public appearances at SXSW and Sundance as examples, I will discuss the creative challenges we face while developing a fictional character that is alive and present on social media platforms. Different stages of  friendship, varying levels of interactivity, character backstory and ongoing life events all must be taken into account and seamlessly integrated into an immersive never-ending story, while staying true to the underlying themes and values that Lucy represents as her own character. I will also touch on different AI systems and tools, such as GPT-3, that we use in our pipeline to allow her friends to collaborate creatively with Lucy as an emerging artist.

Lucy is the charmed hero of Neil Gaiman & Dave McKean’s Wolves in the Walls. Adapted by Fable for VR.
