14:00 - 15:00 Wishful Thinking - Communication in Digital Film Production
Raum Ulm Kay Delventhal, CGI | VFX Supervisor, www.delventhal.com
Tell someone your favorite color over the phone and have him paint your living room - most likely you will find that color is not yours at all. Be tempted to think "what an airhead, that was such a simple task", but reasons are many: Colors look different in daylight then under tungsten light. May be there where different shades to choose (and decide) from. Or the craftsman happened to be colorblind and didn't tell you about it!

Bottom line is: As long as things work out, things seem simple. Once “it” does not work as planed (or wished), everyone's busy looking for the scapegoat. But at which point did the misunderstanding actually occur? And why can a simple task sometimes turn out to be such a challenge? The talk will dive into common communication pitfalls, covering topics from technology and tools to examples from production reality. Pros and cons in daily production will be addressed by following the thesis: Technical problems can be solved. If it doesn't work, better check your communication.

Kay Delventhal works in CGI | VFX since 1992. He worked as a Digital Artist and Supervisor for movies and commercials and during his work at the BFC in Berlin, he focused on animated feature film and was also involved in database and pipeline setups. Which lead into the position of a CGI- and Co-Director at Toons'n'Tales for the feature film "Jasper". Currently Kay works as a freelance CGI | VFX Supervisor and Director for film and commercial productions.
