Steinbeis-Saal Staffordshire University www.staffs.ac.uk
Booth: 3.4
Staffordshire University Faculty of Arts Media and Design is based in Stoke on Trent in the geographical centre of the UK and historically the centre of the UK ceramics industry.
As the traditional industries have largely disappeared so investment in new media and creative industries in Staffordshire has increased.
The Animation and VFX Bachelor Awards at Staffordshire University focus on a choice of development in performance based animation or content creation for CGi visualisation. Animation concentrates on the fundamental aspects of timing and enrichment of character performance through acting principles, gesture and emotional appeal whilst VFX focuses on the development of digital assets, texture, rendering and lighting.
Team working is paramount in making students contribute positively toward a studio brief. Year 2 and 3 students work collaboratively to realise the demands of larger projects for a range of platforms in either 2D Cell Cgi or Stop Motion based projects.

The core philosophy is to encourage observation via drawing, strong concept generation and communication.
Students learn to be self critical and objective enabling them to look “outside of the box” through the investigation of new visual and illustrative treatments in production.
The course underpins practice through theory, career planning and networking toward the conclusion of studies via engagement with industry in a negotiated external brief or workplacement.

THE GAP – is an augmented virtuality adventure game. In an interactive installation the game connects real objects with a virtual space experience.
The player takes the role of a researcher who must overcome a dangerous obstacle searching the magic treasure of the Xiong Indians. The countdown runs and only by his courageous and skillful action he can successfully master this adventure.

Real elements and virtual space melt to one reality. Thereby it creates an entirely new sense of space which becomes also perceptible at the auditive level by an interactive sound design - a new, immersive world originates.
Combined with a head mounted display, the live camera and the real time 3D pictures become a very authentic and tangible experience adventure. Through the display, one can perceive the real objects and the virtual surroundings as one unity.

The first version was conceived as a prototype. It was realised and is ready as an experimental set-up.

Booth: 1.1
The Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) offers an officially recognized Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Game Design. The degree comprises the entire design process of a digital game, ranging from storytelling, visual design, 3D modeling and sound design through game mechanics to programming. Here, students will become familiar with the complexity of a game and learn how the individual areas best work together. During their studies they purposely design and create games outside the mainstream and develop new and advanced game systems alongside their own audio-visual language. The programme also provides a sound understanding for Game Culture and encompasses a thorough involvement with the now extremely important areas of Independent Games and Serious Games. Furthermore the programme provides insights into topics such as GameArt, Augmented Reality and Game Business. It also provides an introduction to Ludology, Narratology and Game History as theoretical background. As a multidisciplinary programme that is willing to reflect and think again, it is constantly looking for an interdisciplinary exchange with the other design programmes in order to give students the opportunity to use the synergies and make the most of one of the most renowned and largest design and art academies in Europe: the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHDK). The students also benefit from collaboration with external partners (this year: the animation festival Fantoche). This enables them to face a concrete design situation and allows them to showcase their games to a broad audience during their studies.
